lazarette
Boat's rear locker
A lazarette is a storage compartment in a boat, typically located in the stern and accessed through a hatch on deck.
It holds equipment, supplies, or gear that needs to be accessible but out of the way: We stowed the extra lines in the lazarette.
The term comes from lazaretto, a quarantine hospital for contagious diseases, reflecting the compartment's original use for isolating sick sailors or storing potentially contaminated cargo.
