lay leader
Unpaid church helper
A lay leader is a person who holds a leadership role in a religious congregation without being ordained clergy.
Lay leaders may conduct services, organize activities, or serve on governing boards while remaining members of the laity rather than professional ministers.
The term appears across Christian denominations and other faith traditions: The lay leader read the scripture passage during Sunday's service.
