jug band

Kazoo and washtub

A jug band is a musical group using homemade or improvised instruments alongside conventional ones.

The jug itself—a large ceramic or glass container blown across to produce bass tones—gives the genre its name.

Other typical instruments include washboards, washtub bass, kazoos, and harmonicas.

The style originated in African American communities in the early twentieth century: They played old-time jug band music on the porch.
