jug bands
Homemade instrument groups
Jug bands are informal musical groups using homemade or improvised instruments alongside conventional ones.
The name comes from the ceramic jug blown across to produce bass notes.
Other typical instruments include washboards, washtub basses, kazoos, harmonicas, and acoustic guitars.
The style emerged from African American folk music in the early twentieth century: They played jug band music on the porch all afternoon.
