joypads

Handheld gaming devices

Joypads are handheld video game controllers, typically featuring directional buttons or a D-pad on one side and action buttons on the other.

The term is largely synonymous with gamepad and emerged in the 1980s alongside home gaming consoles.

Unlike joysticks, which have a prominent vertical lever, joypads lie flat and are gripped with both hands.

I prefer wireless joypads for couch gaming.
