intellectually disabled
Having learning difficulties
Intellectually disabled describes a person with significant limitations in cognitive functioning and adaptive behavior, typically originating before adulthood.
The term replaced older labels like mentally retarded in clinical and legal contexts: services for intellectually disabled adults, an intellectually disabled student in a mainstream classroom.
It emphasizes the disability without defining the person by it.
