informational interview
Job seeker's inquiry
An informational interview is a conversation where someone seeks advice or insights about a career, industry, or company from someone working in that field.
Unlike a job interview, the goal isn't to get hired but to gather information: I set up informational interviews with three marketing directors before deciding to switch careers.
The term is common in career counseling and networking contexts.
