inerts
Chemically inactive materials
Inerts are substances that don't react chemically under normal conditions—gases like nitrogen or argon used in welding and manufacturing to prevent oxidation, or fillers in explosives and pharmaceuticals that add bulk without affecting the active ingredients.
In pyrotechnics, inerts are dummy rounds used for training: The squad practiced loading with inerts before handling live ammunition.
