rolling barrage
Moving artillery curtain
A rolling barrage is an artillery tactic where fire advances in a moving wall ahead of attacking troops, striking successive lines at timed intervals.
Soldiers advance just behind the explosions, using the barrage as cover.
The technique was developed in World War I to support infantry crossing no man's land: The troops followed the rolling barrage toward the enemy trenches.
Also called a creeping barrage.
