income bracket

Tax rate category

An income bracket is a range of earnings used to classify people for tax rates or statistical purposes: Households in the lowest income bracket pay no federal tax.

Tax systems apply different rates to different brackets, so moving into a higher bracket means a portion of income is taxed at a higher rate.

The term also appears in discussions of economic class and consumer demographics.
