impressioning
Blank key manipulation
Impressioning is a lockpicking technique where a blank key is inserted into a lock, manipulated under tension, and removed to examine the marks left by the lock's pins.
The process is repeated—filing where marked, reinserting, manipulating—until the key operates the lock.
The term also applies to similar methods for duplicating keys by taking impressions in soft materials.
