imperial cities
Emperor's seat cities
Imperial cities were cities in the Holy Roman Empire that answered directly to the emperor rather than to local princes or lords.
They enjoyed significant autonomy, self-governance, and trading privileges.
The term sometimes extends to capitals of empires more broadly—cities that served as seats of imperial power: Rome was the original imperial city.
Also called free imperial cities.
