ice wagon

Cold block hauler

An ice wagon was a horse-drawn vehicle used to deliver blocks of ice for household refrigeration before electric refrigerators became common.

The iceman would make regular rounds, chipping off blocks to fit customers' iceboxes.

The phrase survives mainly in slow as an ice wagon for something moving at a frustrating pace.
