human skull

Brain's bony housing

The human skull is the bony structure that forms the head, encasing and protecting the brain while providing the framework for the face.

It consists of 22 bones, most fused together at joints called sutures, with only the lower jaw (mandible) remaining movable.

Skulls appear frequently as symbols of death, danger, or mortality—on pirate flags, poison labels, and in memento mori imagery.

The archaeologists carefully excavated a human skull from the burial site.
