home server

Domestic computing hub

A home server is a computer dedicated to providing services within a household—storing files, streaming media, running backups, or hosting applications accessible to other devices on the network.

Unlike commercial servers, home servers are typically repurposed old computers or small, low-power machines: I set up a home server to store all our photos and run Plex.

The term implies DIY setup and personal control rather than relying on cloud services.
