holy water basin

Church entrance bowl

A holy water basin is a container near the entrance of a Catholic or Orthodox church that holds blessed water.

Worshippers dip their fingers in the basin and make the sign of the cross upon entering, a ritual of purification and blessing.

Also called a stoup or font, though font more commonly refers to the larger vessel used for baptism.
