historical perspective
Viewing through history
Historical perspective is an understanding of events, people, or ideas within the context of their time rather than judging them by present-day standards.
It requires recognizing that values, knowledge, and circumstances differed in the past: From a historical perspective, bloodletting made sense given what physicians believed about disease.
The term also describes the clarity that comes with temporal distance—the ability to see patterns and consequences that weren't visible to those living through events.
