historical commentary
Retrospective event discussion
Historical commentary is analysis or interpretation of past events, texts, or periods, typically offering perspective on their significance or meaning.
The term applies both to scholarly works examining historical documents and to ongoing discussion that places current events in historical context.
Sports broadcasts use the phrase for play-by-play descriptions that become part of the record: That call will go down in historical commentary as one of the worst ever.
