highway marker
Route number sign
A highway marker is a sign identifying a road by its number or name, typically displayed as a distinctive shape containing the route designation.
In the United States, interstate highways use red-white-and-blue shields, while state routes often have unique shapes varying by state.
We turned left at the highway marker for Route 66.
