high-speed steel
Durable tool metal
High-speed steel is a tool steel alloy that retains its hardness at high temperatures, allowing cutting tools to operate at much faster speeds than carbon steel without losing their edge.
The "high-speed" refers not to how fast the steel moves but to how fast it can cut.
Abbreviated HSS, it's the standard material for drill bits, saw blades, and lathe tools: I picked up a set of HSS drill bits.
