hemolyzing

Breaking blood cells

Hemolyzing is the destruction or breakdown of red blood cells, causing hemoglobin to be released into the surrounding fluid.

The process occurs naturally when old blood cells are recycled, but can happen dangerously in reactions to incompatible blood transfusions, certain infections, or toxins.

In medical labs, a hemolyzed blood sample—one where cells have ruptured during collection—may be unusable for testing.
