helpmeets

Companions who assist

Helpmeets is the plural of helpmeet, a companion or helper, especially a spouse.

The word comes from a misreading of Genesis, where God creates "an help meet for" Adam—that is, a helper suitable for him.

The two words were fused into one.

Though the biblical context refers to Eve, helpmeet applies to either sex: They were helpmeets through fifty years of marriage.
