hardy hole
Square hole, anvil
A hardy hole is the square hole in the top of a blacksmith's anvil, designed to hold tools with matching square shanks.
Hardy tools—chisels, fullers, swages—drop into this hole and stay upright, letting the smith work hot metal against them: He set the hot rod over the hardy hole and cut it with a blow.
