hard returns
Forced line endings
Hard returns are line breaks inserted manually by pressing Enter or Return, as opposed to soft returns created automatically by word wrap.
The term comes from typewriter days when the carriage physically returned.
Hard returns stay fixed regardless of margin changes or text reflow: The poem lost its formatting because someone removed all the hard returns.
In digital contexts, they're often visible as paragraph marks or cause unwanted breaks when text is copied between applications.
