hard boil

Cook until solid

To hard boil an egg is to cook it in boiling water until both the white and yolk are fully solid, as opposed to soft boiling, which leaves the yolk runny.

The term extends to anything cooked this way: hard-boiled eggs for the potato salad.

Figuratively, hard-boiled describes a tough, cynical, unsentimental person or attitude—especially in crime fiction's hard-boiled detective genre.
