handholes

Reach-in service ports

Handholes are openings in equipment, utility boxes, or underground vaults sized for a hand to reach through—smaller than manholes, which accommodate a whole person.

They provide access for maintenance, wiring, or inspection without requiring entry: The technician lifted the handhole cover to splice the cables.

In manufacturing, handholes may be cut into containers or machinery casings for cleaning or adjustment.
