Hammer-fired describes a firearm mechanism where a spring-loaded hammer strikes the firing pin to discharge the cartridge.
This is the traditional action in revolvers and many semi-automatic pistols, as opposed to striker-fired designs where an internal striker hits the primer directly.
Most 1911-style pistols are hammer-fired.
