Hammerless describes a firearm designed without an exposed hammer, or with the hammer enclosed within the frame.
The design prevents snagging on clothing during a quick draw and keeps debris out of the mechanism: a hammerless revolver, hammerless shotgun.
The gun still has an internal hammer or striker—it's just not visible or accessible from outside.
