half swing
Abbreviated batting motion
A half swing in baseball or softball is a checked swing where the batter starts but doesn't fully commit, stopping the bat before it crosses the plate.
Whether a half swing counts as a strike is a judgment call—umpires look at wrist break and bat position.
The umpire ruled it a half swing, not a strike.
