checked swing

Stopped mid-swing

A checked swing is a partial swing in baseball where the batter starts to swing but stops before committing fully.

Whether the batter successfully held back—or went around far enough to constitute a strike—is a judgment call, often contested: The umpire ruled it a checked swing, but the catcher appealed to first base.

The phrase extends to any aborted attempt or last-second restraint.
