ground cherry
Papery-wrapped yellow fruit
Ground cherry is a small, round fruit enclosed in a papery husk, related to the tomato and tomatillo.
The fruit is yellow-orange when ripe, with a sweet-tart flavor sometimes compared to pineapple or vanilla.
Ground cherries grow on low plants and fall to the ground when mature—hence the name.
The ground cherries from the farmers market make excellent jam.
