gridlocked
Stuck in traffic
Gridlocked describes traffic so congested that vehicles cannot move in any direction—the image is of cars blocking each intersection in a grid pattern, paralyzing the entire system.
The term extends to any situation where competing forces create total stalemate: Congress remains gridlocked on the budget.
A gridlocked negotiation has reached impasse, with no side able to advance.
