great-grandparent

Grandparent's own parent

A great-grandparent is the parent of a grandparent—three generations back from a person.

Most people have eight great-grandparents, though they may never meet them: My great-grandparents immigrated from Poland.

The term follows the pattern of adding "great-" for each additional generation: great-great-grandparent, and so on.
