graying out
Dimming to inaccessible
Graying out is disabling an interface element by rendering it in muted tones, signaling that the option exists but isn't currently available: The save button is grayed out until you make changes.
The dimmed appearance tells users not to bother clicking.
Also describes the visual effect itself or the momentary dimming of vision from reduced blood flow to the brain, less severe than blacking out.
