grandparented

Kept old privileges

Grandparented describes something exempted from new rules or requirements because it existed before those rules took effect.

A business grandparented under old regulations doesn't have to comply with stricter new ones: The building was grandparented in, so it doesn't need the updated sprinkler system.

The term comes from grandfather clauses—laws that exempted people whose ancestors had certain rights.
