grandiose delusions
Believing oneself exceptional
Grandiose delusions are false beliefs in which a person is convinced they possess exceptional abilities, wealth, fame, or importance—that they are a genius, a secret billionaire, or chosen by God for a special mission.
The term appears primarily in psychiatric contexts, describing a symptom of conditions like bipolar disorder or schizophrenia: His grandiose delusions led him to believe he was communicating directly with world leaders.
Unlike ordinary grandiosity or inflated self-esteem, grandiose delusions persist despite contradicting evidence and may impair functioning.
