goodwife
Household's female head
Goodwife is an archaic title of respect for a married woman of modest social standing, roughly equivalent to Mrs. but below the rank of gentlewoman.
It was commonly shortened to Goody: Goody Proctor, Goody Brown.
The term appears most often in historical contexts, particularly colonial New England and the Salem witch trials.
