good trouble

Righteous civil disobedience

Good trouble is deliberate, principled disruption of unjust systems—civil disobedience undertaken for moral reasons.

The phrase was popularized by civil rights leader John Lewis, who distinguished it from ordinary troublemaking: Getting arrested at a sit-in was good trouble.

The term frames lawbreaking as sometimes necessary for justice: She got into good trouble protesting the pipeline.
