genetic mapping
Locating hereditary markers
Genetic mapping is the process of determining the relative positions of genes on chromosomes.
Scientists use genetic mapping to identify which genes are linked—inherited together—and how far apart they lie on the DNA strand.
The technique helps locate genes responsible for inherited diseases and traits: Genetic mapping identified the gene for cystic fibrosis.
Related to but distinct from genome sequencing, which determines the exact order of DNA base pairs.
