genetic fingerprinting

Hereditary pattern analysis

Genetic fingerprinting is the analysis of DNA to identify individuals or establish biological relationships.

Like traditional fingerprints, each person's genetic pattern is unique (except for identical twins).

The technique is used in criminal investigations, paternity testing, and identifying remains: Genetic fingerprinting cleared the suspect.

Also called DNA fingerprinting or DNA profiling.
