gender-neutral pronoun
Non-binary language tool
A gender-neutral pronoun is one that does not specify the gender of the person it refers to.
English has long had gender-neutral pronouns for plural reference (they, them, their) and for questions (who, whom), but traditionally lacked one for singular reference to a known person.
The singular they has filled this gap, especially for referring to nonbinary individuals: Ask them their name.
Other coined pronouns like ze and xe exist but remain uncommon outside specific communities.
