gastric flu

Intestinal viral infection

Gastric flu is a common misnomer for viral gastroenteritis—an intestinal infection causing nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach cramps.

Despite the name, it has nothing to do with influenza, which is a respiratory illness.

The term persists because the misery feels flu-like: I've been out sick with the gastric flu all week.
