garnisheeing

Legally taking wages

Garnisheeing is the act of legally seizing a portion of someone's wages or assets to satisfy a debt.

When a creditor garnishees wages, money is withheld directly from the debtor's paycheck before they receive it: The IRS has been garnisheeing his paychecks for months.

The practice is governed by court order and applies to unpaid taxes, child support, or other judgments.
