gallnut

Insect-induced tree growth

A gallnut is a hard, round growth that forms on oak trees and certain other plants when wasps or other insects lay eggs in the tissue.

The tree's reaction to the irritation produces these abnormal swellings.

Gallnuts are rich in tannic acid and were historically important in making ink and dyes: Medieval scribes wrote with iron gall ink made from crushed gallnuts.
