freeway pileup
Highway crash cascade
A freeway pileup is a chain-reaction collision involving multiple vehicles on a highway, typically occurring when one crash triggers others as following cars cannot stop in time.
Pileups often happen in conditions of reduced visibility—fog, smoke, or blowing snow—and can involve dozens of vehicles: A massive pileup shut down the interstate for hours.
