freedom song
Protest movement melody
A freedom song is a song associated with social or political liberation movements, especially the American civil rights movement of the 1950s and 60s.
These songs—often adapted from spirituals, hymns, and folk music—served to unify protesters, sustain morale, and communicate resistance: We sang freedom songs as we marched to the capitol. "We Shall Overcome" is the most famous example.
