free sugars
Non-intrinsic saccharides
Free sugars are sugars added to foods during processing or preparation, plus sugars naturally present in honey, syrups, and fruit juices.
The term distinguishes these from sugars bound within whole fruits and vegetables, which are digested more slowly.
Nutrition guidelines often target free sugars specifically: Limit free sugars to less than 10% of daily calories.
