free-thinker

Rejects received wisdom

A free-thinker forms opinions independently, rejecting authority and tradition—especially religious doctrine—in favor of reason and evidence.

The term emerged during the Enlightenment for those who questioned church teachings, and it still carries that association: As a free-thinker, she found organized religion stifling.

Today it applies more broadly to anyone who thinks for themselves rather than accepting received wisdom.
