freakouts

Sudden emotional collapses

Freakouts are episodes of losing emotional control—panic attacks, fits of rage, or moments of overwhelming anxiety.

The term emerged from 1960s drug culture, where a freakout was a bad trip or drug-induced breakdown.

Now it applies broadly to any loss of composure: I had a total freakout when I saw the bill.

Can also describe wild, uninhibited displays of enthusiasm.
