flu pandemic
Worldwide viral epidemic
A flu pandemic is a global outbreak of influenza caused by a new virus strain against which most people lack immunity.
Unlike seasonal flu, which recurs annually in predictable patterns, a pandemic spreads rapidly across continents and can cause severe illness in otherwise healthy populations: The 1918 flu pandemic killed more people than World War I.
Major flu pandemics occurred in 1918, 1957, 1968, and 2009.
